A "virtual journey" (photos pieced together to follow on from one another) through the prison: Fareham Bail Hostel, alias Dickson House, Trinity Street/??George Road??.

All picture files are optimised, although this experience will still take a little longer to load.

Simplified map of Fareham, Hampshire This is a simplified map of Fareham, Hampshire; where the open prison is located. It is drawn from memory, and I reserve the right to correct it from map data when I find my map. There is also an interactive map.

Fareham is on the south coast, between Southampton and Portsmouth, at the very north-western tributary of the Portsmouth Harbour drainage basin, and it is to this that the "Quayside" view on the map refers.

The map shows the centre of Fareham, the bail Hostel being on Trinity Street, at the bottom left of the map. All the relevant roads and locations for the photographs are shown. As you can see, Dickson House is handy for all local amenities, including shops, Court, and the local police Station. The Bus and Rail Stations are also not very far. Fareham is a small town, the rest of it being residential, though it also houses the impressively big Tower of the Civic Centre and the shopping Centre so huge compare with the rest of the settlement that it gives the impression all Fareham's Public budget has been spent on it, on the assumption that all of Fareham's families' shopping budget will be spent within it. There's a ribbon of small shops along West Street, expensive deserted restaurants in the deserted High Street, and that basically is it.

The other striking thing is that there are more old forts than they know what to do with; some grassed over, some restored, but many strangely converted into industrial estates.

Corridor: Dolphin poster by Room 8

Room 8 was where I first stayed. The corridors have carpetting, discreet lighting, heating, artwork on the walls, twee glass walls, &c.

CCTV cameras like this are omipresent, but that doen't mean there's anyone on the other end.

Photography banned, Huh? CCTV manned 24 hours a day, Huh? More like the Big Brother house than the Big Brother house. The instituion is run by Hampshire Probation Service, whose logo look's rather like the stripes in the Big Brother logo.

Since I'm not suspicious, they moved me into Room 13 when my stay was extended (due to clerical error at the CPS, apparently. Why wasn't the clerk in here instead?)

Room 13: Door, wardrobe door

Room 13: Door, wardrobe door

Fitted Waredrobe, sink unit, minibar, sorry - 'couldn't resist that joke. All these damn criminals being treated like this, why can't honest hardworking citizens be treated occasionally? We, it happened to me, but I was also locked in and had to report somewhere every hour or so.

The third 120° rotation. Adjustable heating, duvet, materess without spikes in (my own bed at home did until recently). Fan (we're by the seaside here).

The Fish food people. Scene of Fights on weekend nights: Inmates watching eatsenders in the Noisey Room (TV Lounge) often find the view of Skippers more interesting.

Turning further south, across the roof/ledge past the Staff Bedroom. Very few prisons are this close to Courts, though very many Custody areas. Custody areas are not prisons, mind, just holding pens, unless the allegation is murder or something.

(Not by jumping off the roof, the window won't open wide enough for me, just my camera.)
